On Saturday, the Centre Wellington-based Partners With Purpose will celebrate its annual walk-a-thon to support its work in Haiti.

The organization focuses on providing literacy training in the north of Haiti. It now supports 11 adult literacy classes in the area surrounding Cap-Haitien.

Media have carried countless stories of the devastation in Haiti resulting from Hurricanes Gustav, Hannah, and Ike, which have wreaked havoc on the island. Partners with Purpose has taken a long-term approach by offering education by literacy training.  Colleagues who have worked in and lived in Haiti for decades, say they have never seen anything close to the current situation there.

The walk-a-thon begins at 9:30am Saturday at Wellington Court apartments at Maiden Lane and Garafraxa Streets in Fergus. There is a five kilometre route west to Elora mapped out for walkers. Donations and walkers are invited and pledge forms are available by contacting Partners with Purpose. anyone interested can simply arrive at the starting point. Prizes are available for walkers in three age categories.
