Victoria Park Seniors Centre hosts events to celebrate seniors in Centre Wellington

Every June Centre Wellington joins the rest of Ontario in celebrating Seniors Month.  

This year marks the 33rd anniversary of the designation and the Victoria Park Seniors Centre (VPSC) will use the opportunity to thank and celebrate seniors the community. There are events taking place at the centre that are open to everyone.

“Our mandate is to support active, healthy lifestyles for older adults through an extensive range of social, health, recreational and educational activities and programs” said supervisor of senior services Kathryn Morgan. “Seniors’ month gives us the opportunity to stop and thank all of our seniors in Centre Wellington who truly make amazing contributions in our centre and our community.”

Here are a few of the events happening:

– Spring Swing, June 10 from 7 to 11pm. Dance to live music performed by The Greytones at the Elora Legion. All welcome. Dance to the music of Elvis, Roy Orbison, Ricky Nelson, Garth Brooks, Patsy Cline and other country and pop artists from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s. Cash bar and snacks available. All proceeds go to Victoria Park Seniors Centre. Contact the Seniors Centre for tickets 519.846.9691, ext. 204. Tickets can also be purchased at the door for $10;

– New members talk and tour, June 12 at 10am. Discover new activities and opportunities at Victoria Park Seniors Centre to make the most of retirement. Meet other new members, volunteers and staff. Take a tour, enjoy refreshments and learn about programs and services available. Contact the Centre to schedule a tour;

– VPSC’s 25th anniversary memory lunch, June 14 at 12pm, cost is $5. Celebrating 25 years of homemade lunches with a walk down memory lane, and a menu that pays tribute to the original homemade lunches offered at the centre with the 1992 price;

 – Poker walk, June 19 at 10:30am. An enjoyable morning that promotes fun, physical activity. Walking two kilometers on a pre-determined route led by fitness instructor. Walking poles are available. Everyone can participate, even if you cannot go on the walk. This event is free and includes refreshments after the walk;

– Seniors month $5 barbecue lunch, June 21 at 12pm. Heritage River Retirement Residence is subsidizing the cost of the lunch at $5;

– Strawberry Social, June 27 at 2 pm. Toe-tapping music with the centre’s guitar band: The Country Classics. There will be Ontario strawberries with shortcake and ice cream. Early bird ticket deadline: $6 by June 16 or $7 after;

– Peach Social, Aug. 19 from 10am to 1pm. The 15th annual peach social fundraiser with frozen homemade peach pies for sale. Stay for lunch, enjoy fresh baked peach pie or peach shortcake and browse the tables of crafts, home baking and large sized fresh Niagara peaches for sale by the basket.
