Upper Credit Humane Society also seeking votes on cash in contest

Cats Anonymous of Orton is one of two animal shelter organizations seeking area votes for an internet contest that could provide thousands of dollars.

The Upper Credit Humane Society is also involved in the contest. Volunteer Judith-Anne Kolu said. The society is participating and asks people to vote for it on as many computers as they have access. People can vote every day until until April 18. “Most people use computers on a regular basis and your vote means you are helping animals with very little output – a great feeling.”

The society is a temporary home to 15 dogs and has almost 100 cats not including the huge amount of kittens kept in foster homes. “Just this week a mother cat with sox kittens (born overnight) were dumped at our Shelter door,” and all will have to be spayed and neutered and monetary help is urgently needed, Kolu said.

The society welcomes the shelter challenge as a way to win much needed dollars. Two American websites involved with animal rescue are running a contest for Canada and the United States, and the two groups are part of it. Petfinder.com and animalrescuesite.com host the websites.

They get free food from sponsors and advertisers depending on the number of clicks the sites get. The contest attracts visitors and the prizes benefit shelters.

All shelters eligible are listed on Petfinder.com. There are weekly prizes for the top vote getters in the U.S and Canada. Currently, Upper Credit is in first place for Canada. Weekly prizes are $1,000, and there is a $10,000 prize for the overall vote-getter.

Kolu said the Upper Credit is in first place in the Canadian end of the contest, and Cats Anonymous is in sixth.

She said there is a friendly competition, and people can actually vote from different servers for both sites every day.

“Our vet bills alone take up a huge chunk of donated money as no animal can be adopted without being spayed-neutered and vet checked,” she explained. “ The coffers need to be repleted on a regular basis and we are thrilled to participate in this opportunity with your help.

“Your vote is crucial for the Upper Credit Humane Society to stay at the top,” she added.
