The United Way of Guelph & Wellington has announced it will allocate funding in 2008 to 50 community based agencies that provide vital local programs in Guelph and Wellington County.
Among those collecting the larger grants were:
– Action Read Community Literacy Centre, $49,700;
– Big Brothers Big Sisters of Guelph, $127,205;
– Community Resource Centre, $88,200;
– Family Counselling & Support Services, $169,813;
Guelph-Wellington Women In Crisis, $46,671;
– Hospice Wellington, $63,000;
– North Wellington Seniors Council,$11,000;
– United Way Of Guelph & Wellington, $127,730;
– Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Wellington, $18,791;
– Volunteer Centre Of Guelph-Wellington, $142,684;
– Wyndham House Inc., $254,016;
Guelph-Wellington Seniors Association, $53,876;
– East Wellington Advisory Group, $44,100; and
– Centre Wellington Food Bank, $10,000.
All agencies receiving grants offer programs that address the needs of those living in Guelph and Wellington County.
The funding of each agency program is reviewed on a three-year basis with fund distribution volunteers visiting each agency and using social planning research to determine how agency programs meet a specific need in the community.
For many agencies, the funding ensures essential programming will continue.
There was some doubt this year that the campaign would reach its goal, but a big push in the final weeks allowed organizers to make their target
“Because of our United Way funding we are able to provide early start literacy programs for families and educational supports for adults,” said Mira Clarke, executive director of Action Read Community Literacy Centre. “This funding is essential to the continuation of programs like ours and many others in the Guelph and Wellington community.”
In April, when the organization completes its annual audit, requests for increased or new funding will be reviewed by the volunteers of the fund distribution committee who will determine how any available funds may be allocated.
The United Way of Guelph and Wellington is a volunteer driven, charitable foundation led by a board of directors, which works to meet pressing needs in the Guelph and Wellington community through social planning, fundraising, and fund distribution.
