UGDSB students score below provincial average in EQAO test

The percentage of Grade 3 and Grade 6 students in the Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) who met provincial expectations in the most recent Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) test is below the provincial average across all categories.

UGDSB

According to the 2016-17 EQAO test results released on Sept. 20, the percentage of UGDSB Grade 3 students who met the provincial expectations include: reading 71 per cent, writing 71% and math 58%.

Provincially students success rates were 74, 73 and 62% respectively.

UGDSB Grade 6 students also fell short of the provincial average. In reading 80% reached the provincial standard, in writing 78% and in math, 48%, whereas the provincial averages are 81, 79 and 50% respectively.

Similarly, the percentage of UGDSB students who reached provincial standards was lower than last year.

In the 2015-16 school year 83% of the students met or exceeded the provincial standard in reading, with 80% in writing and 51% in math.

On the other hand, a higher percentage of Grade 3 students met the provincial average in reading this year compared to last year’s 69%.

In writing the percentage didn’t change, holding at 71%, and in math the percentage of successful students went down from 59%.

In both grades female students out performed their male counterparts.

Seventy-seven per cent of Grade 3 girls met the provincial average in reading, 79% in writing and 59% in math, compared to 66%, 63% and 57% respectively for boys.

The trend continued in Grade 6 with 87% of girls seeing success in reading, 88% in writing and 49% in math, whereas the boys’ totals were 75, 69 and 47%.

“The collection and reporting of this data is the necessary first step in the process of critical analysis,” a board press release states.

“The data is used by school administrators and teachers to develop school improvement plans and specific action plans with the goal of higher achievement.

WCDSB

Grade 6 students in the Wellington Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) beat the provincial average in all categories.

In the 2016-17 school year 82% of students met or exceeded the provincial standard in reading, 79% in writing and 52% in math.

The reading and writing figures are up from 2015-16, when 79% and 76% of students were successful respectively. In math, however, the percentage of successful students went down from 54 to 52% for 2016-17.

The percentage of successful Grade 3 students was below the provincial average in both reading and writing at 72% and 71% respectively. In math, however, the most recent group of tested Grade 3 students was above the provincial average in math, with 66% seeing success.

Compared to the 2015-16 school year the 2016-17 Grade 3 students improved in reading (70% in 2015-16).

However, fewer students met the provincial average for writing (75% in 2015-16) and math (68% in 2015-16).

Females beat out males in every category for both grades except in Grade 6 math, where 50% of females were successful, compared to 54% of males.

Of Grade 6 students tested, 88% of females were successful in writing, compared to 72% of males; and 86% of girls were successful in reading compared to 78% of boys.

Seventy-eight per cent of the Grade 3 girls were successful in reading, 82% in writing and 69% in math; whereas the boys’ total were 66, 61 and 63% respectively.

“While we are proud of the achievement of our students on the provincial assessment over the past several years, we see opportunities for growth and improvement,” said WCDSB superintendent of education Mike Glazier.
