Two charged after car drives at OPP officers, smashes into cruiser
GUELPH - Two people have been charged in connection with a recent incident in which a car evaded a RIDE program, drove at OPP officers and then smashed into a cruiser.
On Nov. 7 at about 1am Wellington County OPP officers were conducting a RIDE program on the Hanlon Expressway, near College Avenue, in Guelph.
Police say officers spoke to the male driver of a grey Chevrolet Impala who refused to provide a driver’s licence and then offered false verbal identification.
“The driver then put the car in gear and drove at officers, who narrowly avoided serious injuries (by) instinctively dodging the car,” police stated in a press release.
“The male continued his flight into the City of Guelph and struck a fully marked OPP cruiser to evade apprehension. Fearing that pursuing the vehicle would perpetuate the dangerous behaviour and put public safety at risk, police disengaged.”
On Nov. 22, two weeks after what police called a “thorough investigation,” police announced they have charged two people.
Michael Kidd, 37, of Saugeen Shores, was charged with obstructing a police officer, personation with intent to avoid arrest, driving while suspended, dangerous driving, flight from a peace officer, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and two counts of assaulting a peace officer with a weapon.
Sarah Jane Posthumus, 32, of Arran-Elderslie, was charged with failing to comply with a recognizance and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order.
