Train versus SUV

On April 1 at about 4:40pm, Wellington County OPP received a report of an SUV that collided with a train on Maltby Road just east of Watson Road here.

Police say the 1997 Toyota Forerunner was travelling westbound on Maltby Road and was slowing down for the train tracks, which are not controlled by railway barriers/gates or flashing lights.

Police say the male driver heard the train whistle but did not see the train until it was too late. The driver attempted to stop his vehicle, however it slid on the loose gravel and came to rest on the train tracks.  The driver tried to back-up but could not do so fast enough and the train collided with the front end of the SUV.

The male driver was not injured and charges will not be laid. The train was not damaged and the SUV sustained moderate damage to the front end. The Canadian Pacific Railway was notified.
