Townships new team starts basketball season

The local Centre Wellington Celtics basketball program introduced its newest girls’ team to the community recently.

For only the second time in the club’s 10 year history, a team of grade 6 and younger  girls is on the court. Consisting of players from as far away as Arthur, it is a regional community rep team.

After many weeks of practice, the team finally had its season-opening game, playing host to the Guelph Phoenix. The visiting Phoenix played tenacious defence, which resulted in several turnovers for the local girls.

On offence, Guelph spread the floor well and shared the ball in order to get every player involved.

Right from the opening tip, the Celtics knew they were in for a battle, eventually losing the contest 37-22.

Centre Wellington was led by Grace Rooney, who had nine points. Defensively, Dannika Bauman hustled all over the court and had an outstanding game.
