Township is ready to celebrate Food Day Canada

On July 30, the Centre Wellington Rotary Club invites everyone to come to Bissell Park by the river here from 11am to 3pm to enjoy the delicious tastes of summer.

That is Food Day Canada, an annual mid-summer celebration when people share Canada’s rich culinary heritage, and the best-managed food system on the planet.

“Food Day Canada is the time and place for Canadians to share their food and their stories with each other while leading other nations in cultural diversity, food ethics, magnificent flavours and fun,” said Anita Stewart, who helped found and promote the national event. Centre Wellington Rotary, Slow Food Elora, KIPP Elora, the Elora Farmers’ Market, Fergus Elora Tourism, and the Grand River Agricultural Society, will be on hand to make it a picnic. The Ernie Kalwa Jazz Quartet will be there to add to the summertime vibe. Here is the great Canadian menu: a pig roast, local beef sliders and hotdogs, local baked beans, freshly baked pretzels, salads, baked potatoes and more. Mapleton’s Organic ice cream will be available. FM brewery will be there to talk about craft brewing and it is available in the beer garden.  There will also be lemonade and watermelon to make it a perfect old-fashioned picnic.

Admission is free and all are welcome.  Food tickets will be on sale. Organizers suggest people bring a picnic blanket and plan to enjoy a Saturday in the Park.

Bissell Park is on East Mill Street in Elora, between Melville and Mary Streets.
