Township hires bylaw enforcement officer

It appears the municipality’s newest employee has his work cut out for him.

Last week, Mayor John Green introduced Bruce Brockelbank as the township’s new bylaw enforcement officer.

Brockelbank, who was named to the position on July 27, told council there appears to be “a long list” of items on his plate before his time will be spent simply keeping on top of things.

“It doesn’t look like there’s been a lot of … enforcement,” he said of the situation across the township.

He suggested a clean yard bylaw would help address some of the problems in the municipality. Under such a bylaw, offending parties would be given 72 hours to address the issue(s) and, failing that, would be levied a fine or issued an order to clean up the mess. After another 72 hours the township could then go in and clean up the property and bill the owner on their tax bill.

Green said there was a tidy yard bylaw in at least one municipality prior to amalgamation but it obviously was never carried forward in Mapleton.
