Five unnamed parks in Rockwood’s south end will be given new monickers recognizing the village’s heritage.
On Nov. 4 parks and recreation manager Robin Milne presented a report outlining proposed names for the parks, in accordance with the township’s policy of naming streets and parks to recognize and honour war dead and pioneer families.
The names proposed by Milne for the five parks (four in the Rockwood Ridge development and one within the Noble Ridge subdivision) are as follows:
– Samuel Ryckman Park for the small park area between Alicia and Gabriel Lanes;
– John Jolliffe Park, at the north end of Hampson Crescent;
– Ramsey Park, north of Ridge Road between Old Maple Boulevard and Milnle Place;
– Osburn Park, behind the southeast corner of Ridge Top Crescent; and
– Harris Park, south of Harris Street, northeast of the subdivisions’ stormwater ponds.
Councillor Doug Breen said the historical information provided on each pioneer family in Milne’s report should be placed on signs at the respective parks, all of which could be included as part of a heritage walking trail.
“I think it’s a really cool idea,” Breen said of the new park names.
Mayor Chris White said the township’s trails committee could do the layout for a heritage trail, with the heritage committee taking charge of the signs.
“This makes absolute sense,” said White, commending Milne for the “excellent work” in coming up with park names that “have meaning.”
Council unanimously approved the five new park names.
