Town rules against bike, skateboard ban

Yet another municipality has refused a Wellington North request to create a county-wide bylaw prohibiting bikes and skateboards on sidewalks.

Last week Erin council voted unanimously to simply “file” the request, after councillors did not offer support for the proposal.

Mayor Rod Finnie noted the town already has a bylaw prohibiting skateboarding in certain areas, and councillor Barb Tocher added bikes are much safer on sidewalks than on roads.

“We don’t want a 5-year-old riding their bike on the street,”?she said.

Erin has joined Mapleton and Puslinch as municipalities that recently turned down the Wellington North request, which apparently stems from repeated problems in the town of Mount Forest, including one incident that put an injured elderly man in the hospital.
