Tower Street watermain break illustrates flooding concerns in Centre Wellington

As council met on Feb. 18, Centre Wellington’s water department was still dealing with the aftermath of a watermain break that morning.

The break caused rerouting of traffic along Tower Street/ Highway 6 in Fergus south of Belsyde Avenue.

Mayor Joanne Ross-Zuj said it was a long day without water for the people affected.

She said across the province, municipalities have to be aware of the impact of a potential thaw following recent severe cold weather.

“If we get a thaw, where will the water go?” Ross-Zuj asked.

The mayor added that as time progresses, the municipality needs to be aware of its flood plans, and what residents should be on the alert for.

“There’s going to be a lot of water and we’re going to have to be able to figure out how we are going to manage in our comunity.”
