Back at it – Students across Wellington County headed back to school on Sept. 8 and it was a similar scene at most schools: friends reuniting, goodbye hugs to parents and students meeting their new teachers. Fun in the sun – PHOTO 1: The Centre Wellington Black Committee held its fifth annual Family FunDay on Sept. 6 at Bissell Park in Elora. These volunteers were key to its success. Car show – PHOTO 1: Highland Pines held a car show on Sept. 5, but it was for much more than classic cars. PHOTO 2: Visitors could take a ride in this military vehicle that was on site for the show. Car show – PHOTO 1: A warm, sunny evening provided the perfect conditions for a strong turnout at the final Mapleton Farmers Market of the year, held on Labour Day Monday at the municipal parking lot. The seasonal wrap-up featured a partnership with the Drayton Rotary Club’s car show and barbecue. Attendees enjoyed live musical entertainment from local talent, Ivy Chung, alongside fun activities like market bingo and special giveaways. Winner – Mildarose B. of Guelph is the lucky winner of the LOTTO 6/49 second prize worth $52,763 in the July 8 draw. Mildarose, a personal support worker, said she learned about a group of friends who won $60 million in 2018, and that inspired her to start playing the lottery with OLG. “The timing of this win couldn’t be more perfect. My son and I both have birthdays coming up this week,” said Mildarose while at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to collect her winnings. With her windfall, Mildarose plans to save for her son’s education, pay some bills and enjoy a special birthday party. The winning ticket was purchased at Shoppers Drug Mart on Silvercreek Parkway North in Guelph.

New location – Elora Ski and Cycle is relocating from its current Moir Street location to 7457 Speers Rd., with an opening planned for Oct. 1. Owners Renato and Natalie Spremulli say the new location will provide more room for test rides, bike-fitting, and an expanded inventory with more available sizes. For the ski hill, the business is adding a Wintersteiger Omega SBI belt sanding and stone grinding machine for tuning skis and snowboards. Stop by for an espresso, “more fun, more learning and more listening to the community,” the owners say. The shop is currently offering deals on bikes, gear and accessories in celebration of five years in business. Submitted photo

Moving up – The U22 AA Waterloo Ravens hosted a preseason game against the Barrie Jr. Sharks on Aug. 30 at the Steve Kerr Memorial Complex in Listowel. Addyson Martin (#21), of Elora, is seen skating for the Ravens. She has committed to play NCAA Division 1 ice hockey at Robert Morris University in Pennsylvania. The Ravens swooped in for a win over the Sharks 2-1. The 2026-27 OWHL U22 Elite season kicks off for the Ravens on the road on Sept. 11 against Stoney Creek. Photos by Kelsey Bent

Memorial tournament – The fifth annual Chris Bults Memorial Baseball Tournament took place on Aug. 28 and 29 in Moorefield, with 15 teams competing. A home run derby was held with proceeds donated to the Kaydance Ford Athletic and Trades Foundation. The rest of the proceeds will be donated to the Juravinski Cancer Centre and the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation. The Taylor Moore band performed under the pavilion and the Moorefield Firefighters Association served food from its firehouse fries trailer. Overall the tournament had a solid turnout and met its goal of bringing the community together, officials say. The Chris Bults Memorial Baseball Tournament is next hosting the event on Aug. 27, 2027. Appreciation – Minto and District Lions Club president Judy Worsley presented Geoff Gamblin a certificate of appreciation for selling Easter bunnies for the club.
