Silver Mustangs – The Grand River Mustangs U15B team travelled to Etobicoke last Saturday to take on the Markham-Stoufville Stars in the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association (OWHA) finals. Team officials say it was a tight game right until the end, with the Stars scoring an empty-net goal late in the third period to defeat the Mustangs 3-1. The Grand River girls, who brought home silver medals, were also the first team in Mustangs history to ever make it to the OWHA finals, officials say. Submitted photo

Young author – Fergus author Charis Alabi spent the morning of March 25 reading to nine classes at Elora Public School. The Grade 4 JD Hogarth student shared her own book, In a World Where you Can Be Anything, What Would You Be? with students in kindergarten through Grade 4 in the library of the Elora school. Alabi began by reading to 70 or so kindergarten students, keeping them engaged by pausing frequently to ask questions, which the students seemed excited to answer. When the enthusiastic kids began speaking over one another, Alabi calmly suggested, “how about we all raise our hands and give other people a chance to share?” She gave the students a chance to ask their own questions too, and the kindergartners were curious about how long it took Alabi to finish the book and what the process was like. She showed them her original first draft, hand written on lined paper. Photo by Robin George
