Supportive housing units for 10 youth coming to Guelph
GUELPH – More than $1.7 million in federal and provincial funding has been provided for 10 new supportive housing units for homeless and at-risk youth in Wellington County and Guelph.
On Oct. 16, representatives from government and community organizations attended Wyndham House’s Welcome 2 Waterloo project open house on Waterloo Avenue in Guelph.
The project offers 10 affordable congregate supportive housing units for homeless youth or youth at risk of chronic homelessness.
Three units will be prioritized for youth who are pregnant and parenting, or leaving domestic violence and/or human trafficking.
Residents will receive primary care, harm reduction, mental health, occupational therapy, life skills and educational supports – among others.
County warden Chris White said in the release the project is “committed to helping at-risk youth achieve stability and independence.”
The county is contributing ongoing rent supplement funding to keep the units affordable and accessible.
County housing services director Dave Purdy said residents will receive “critical supports” around the clock.
