Students take on public speaking competition in Belwood

The Belwood and District Lions Club hosted its annual elementary school public speaking competition on Feb. 23, at the Belwood Community Hall.

There were 17 speakers from five area schools presenting a wide range of topics in English and French.

There was a large and enthusiastic crowd of friends and family in attendance as well. The top three winners in each class included:

Pre-competitive English for Grade 3 to 5:

– 1st place – Ireland Costigan, East Garafraxa Public School;   

– 2nd place – Talia Sawyer, Victoria Terrace Public School;  and

– 3rd place – Soraya Hummel, Victoria Terrace Public School.

Junior English for Grade 6 to 8:

– 1st place – Olivia Pieffers,  Maranatha  Christian School;  

– 2nd place –  Jesse Nind,  John Black Public School; and

– 3rd place – Bailey Isnor- Huber,  East Garafraxa Public School.

Pre-competitive French  for Grade 3 to 5:

– 1st place – Rhys Organ,  JD Hogarth Public School;

– 2nd place – Cam Skerritt, JD Hogarth Public School; and

– 3rd place – Julia Gardiner, JD Hogarth Public School.

Junior French for Grade 6 to 8:

– 1st place – Halley Wettlaufer,  JD Hogarth Public School; and

– 2nd Place – Lucas Mason,  JD Hogarth Public School.

 The top two speakers in each class qualify to advance to the Lions District A-15 finals on April 2 in St. George.
