Structure fire in Morriston being treated as arson by Ontario Fire Marshal's office

An early Sunday morning fire here is being treated as arson.

Firefighters responded on March 5 at 4:31am to 59 Queen St. (Highway 6) in Morriston.

Puslinch Fire and Rescue Services chief fire prevention officer Michael Roess said the building was vacant at the time and damage was limited to an area on the main floor of the house, which is currently listed for sale.

“Firefighters did an exterior attack prior to going inside and did a very good job taking control of the fire,” Roess said.

He explained 12 Puslinch firefighters initially arrived on the scene prior to the arrival of mutual aid from the Guelph-Eramosa, Guelph and Hamilton departments.

“By the time they arrived, we pretty well had it under control,” said Roess.

He estimated the fire was put out within an hour and then the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office and the OPP started their investigations. Officials say they believe the fire was deliberately set.

As a result of an ongoing investigation into over a dozen arson cases in the region, Crime Stoppers is offering a minimum reward of $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of those responsible.
