Storybrook ice rink looking for community volunteers

FERGUS – The Storybrook ice rink, located  at Kirvan Park, is on the hunt for community volunteers to help maintain the ice this winter.

As of now the rink has yet to open due to “the lack of community support and the fluctuation in the weather,” said rink volunteer Jami Fetterly.

Asked how many volunteers are needed to maintain the rink over the winter, Fetterly said “we need as many volunteers as possible.”

Volunteers will be tasked with flooding and shoveling the rink.

“Ideally it needs to be flooded nine times per week,” said Fetterly.

“People should volunteer … because it supports community connection, youth engagement and accessible recreation, while also giving volunteers a rewarding way to give back.”

Those interested in volunteering can contact Fetterly by texting 226-332-4357 or by messaging her on Facebook at Jami Rose Fetterly.

“Volunteers help ensure the rink is friendly, inclusive and enjoyable for everyone,” said Fetterly, “from young children learning to skate to teens playing shinny and adults skating for exercise.”
