Connected communities are the wave of the future says Puslinch mayor Dennis Lever.

Lever made the comments on June 4 as he provided councillors with an update on a recent Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference.

One of the sessions was related to smart communities and the challenge of connecting communities with fibre optic cable.

“Whether we realize or not  that is really the way we have to go.”

He explained “the amount of data (being used in business) will increase dramatically. So unless there is another technique out there that I’m not aware of, we’re all going to need to get connected with fibre.”

Lever said even municipal vehicles will have GPS systems in documenting minimum standards for winter road maintenance such as the application of road salt.

He noted one conference representative from Alberta spoke on the importance of keeping younger people within the community.

People can utilize online education to further their learning and companies have a better chance at survival when there is high speed fibre available.
