SLAR in concert at Museum and Archives

Southern Ontario folk group, Same Latitude As Rome (SLAR)  will appear at the final August Outdoor Concert to be held at the Wellington County Museum and Archives on Aug. 28 from 7 to 8 pm.

Same Latitude As Rome says when it comes to their music, “Canadian history never sounded so good,” which reflects the fact that the group performs a large repertoire of original songs that tell interesting and sometimes obscure stories about significant Canadian historical events.

At a SLAR concert one can expect to hear songs about the War of 1812, Louis Riel, and David Thompson among many others. Along with being entertained by great musicianship, audiences of all ages are certain to appreciate how compelling Canadian history can be.

SLAR takes its name from the fact that the southernmost part of Ontario, is geographically the same latitude as Rome. A Parks Canada interpretative sign at Point Pelee National Park inspired the group’s name in 2005.

Led by award winning songwriter, Fergus based Peter Boyer, Same Latitude As Rome has recorded 4 albums since 2005, with the most recent being the critically acclaimed 1812. The group performed throughout southern Ontario as part of 1812 commemorations from Toronto to Amherstburg and many locales in between, wherever festivals, concerts and reenactments were scheduled.

Currently SLAR is recording a new CD with legendary producer J.K. Gulley in Kitchener, tentatively entitled Early Days. Multi-instrumentalist  J.K. Gulley will be performing as a backup musician with SLAR on Aug. 28. The group is just putting the finishing touches on the new album, and hopes to have it released this fall.

Their performance on Aug. 28 will be an opportunity for friends and local history buffs to preview the new songs in the beautiful setting of the Wellington County Museum and Archives to help mark the end of the summer season.
