Six juvenile rabbits abandoned behind Rockwood store
Four- to seven-month-old rabbits found in 'neglected condition'
ROCKWOOD – Six juvenile domestic lion head rabbits were found abandoned behind the Rockwood Foodland at about 6:40pm on March 20.
An animal services officer from the Guelph Humane Society (GHS) responded to a call from the person who found them.
The rabbits appear to be approximately four to seven months old. Upon assessment, the rabbits are in neglected condition and will require veterinary care.
“It is unfortunate domestic rabbits are often mistaken to have the same survival instincts as their wild counterparts,” said Katherine Leonard, GHS senior manager, community services in a press release.
“If these young ones were left where they were found they would have succumbed to disease or predators. We are grateful to the kind member of the public who reached out to ensure they could get access to the care they need.”
GHS encourages community members that may have information about this incident to report it to the Provincial Animal Welfare Service (PAWS) at 1-833-9-ANIMAL (1-833-926-4625).
