Councillors here are seeing the trees through a  forest of local volunteers.

As a result, councillors recently agreed to pay for up to four members of its tree committee to attend the Ontario Urban Forest Council presentation in Cambridge at a cost of $30 each.

Councillor Barb Burrows said Toni Ellis, of the Neighbourwoods committee in Centre Wellington, recently made a presentation in Minto. She noted Ellis will be one of the presenters at that workshop.

“I think with our Communities in Bloom work, we should get our trees in order as well,” Burrows said. “The agenda makes it sound as if it would be a very interesting day.”

In later discussion, councillor Tammy Reiner said in a number of areas it is public works staff taking care of the trees. She asked if this would be of use to those people, too.

Burrows said this workshop is more directed at volunteers.

The impact would be more in the pruning of small trees - not major maintenance.

Mayor David Anderson said the Neighbourwoods program in Centre Wellington was basically spearheaded by Ellis. He said anyone interested in volunteering is offered training in how to prune trees.

“It’s getting people more involved,” he said.
