School board has raised more than $2.5 million for Terry Fox Foundation

GUELPH – Over the years, the Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) has raised more than $2.5 million for the Terry Fox Foundation across all its schools.

In 2024, the board raised $122,067.

Four schools have raised over $100,000 to date, including:

  • Centennial Collegiate Vocational Institute in Guelph ($254,093);
  • Erin District High School ($210,751);
  • John F. Ross Collegiate Vocational Institute in Guelph ($103,858); and
  • Norwell District Secondary School in Palmerston ($100,771).

Over 10,000 schools across Canada raised close to $14 million for cancer research in 2024.

“Your students have shown themselves to be positive agents of change, empowered and determined to lead the fight against cancer,” a letter from the Terry Fox Foundation states.

Terry Fox set out on his Marathon of Hope on April 12, 1980 in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

His goal was to raise money and awareness for cancer research while running across the country.

After 143 days, 5,373 kilometres and over $24.17 million raised, cancer returned to his lungs and he was forced to stop on Sept. 1, 1980.

He died at the age of 22 on June 28, 1981.
