$10,000 originally set aside for a SCBA self contained breathing apparatus) filling station, is now moving to the 2011 budget.

At a recent fire committee meeting, Arthur Fire Chief Jim Morrison asked that the monies set aside for the station be placed in a reserve for next year.

The reason is the cost for the equipment is substantially higher than originally expected. The committee recommended the money be placed in reserve for the Arthur Fire Department’s 2011 budget.

Councillor John Matusinec explained that during the original budget consultations, there was no firm price on the gear.

“It ended up being quite a bit more, and $10,000 wasn’t going to cover it.”

But, he said, in the past unspent reserves just went back into the budget. As a result,  the committee’s request was that the cash goes directly to the fire budget.

Mayor Mike Broomhead asked what is the cost of the filling station now.

Matusinec estimated the price is between $27,000 and $28,000. “It’s a lot more than $10,000.” Council had no issue with endorsing the request.
