Rural pick-up in jeopardy

A pilot project aimed at expanding rural waste pick-up could find itself spinning its wheels unless more residents participate.
Minto Deputy-Mayor Judy Dirksen recently commented on the project stating that the garbage and recycling pick-up project is not going well.
Minto was one of two rural municipalities in Wellington picked for the project; however participation seems to be even lower than anticipated.
Guelph-Eramosa Township is the other one under study.
Dirksen said only 12 per cent of residents are leaving garbage out for pick-up while 23 per cent are leaving recyclables.
“So there is a concern this service could end, even before project ends in October.”
She wondered if council should take a stand encouraging residents to make use of the service.
“Perhaps it would help if we get the word out on this.”
Mayor David Anderson agreed.
“We are not always going to have a [local] landfill site.”
