Road safety week results

Police have announced the local results of Canada Road Safety Week, which ran from May 16 to 22, 2017.

During the Canada-wide campaign, which aims to “make roads safer and save lives,” Wellington County OPP focused on its “big four”: impaired driving, aggressive driving, distracted driving and failure to wear or improper use of seat belts.

Campaign charges were:

- 111 for speeding;

- 41 seat belt violations;

- 15 stop and yield;

- five distracted driving;

- four careless driving;

- two racing; and

- two alcohol/impaired driving; three suspensions (two 90-day, one warn range).

During the campaign Wellington County OPP also investigated a total of 18 vehicle collisions, five of which involved injuries to one or more parties, and one that resulted in the death of a driver.

“Traffic Safety is and will continue to be a top priority,” stated Wellington County OPP Inspector Scott Lawson.

“We are unfortunately still seeing the devastating outcomes of drivers who aren’t focusing on the road and aren’t abiding by traffic laws.

“Our officers are dedicated to the safety of the roadways and will continue watching for these drivers who are putting others at risk.”
