Reading Club wrapping up, but lots to do at libraries

The end of Summer Reading Club is in sight, but it’s not too late to sign up! The last day to submit your ballots for amazing prizes is Saturday, Aug. 19.

All 14 branches have three prizes available, for a variety of ages, including teens and adults. One book read = one ballot entered.

What kind of prizes are available?

Ballots can be entered online, or in person at your local branch. Would you like to participate, but aren’t sure where to begin? Check out some of our Book Lists in our online catalogue. Lists this month include special 2023 Summer Reading recommendations like:

Curious Creatures: How to Train

Your Dragon (Grades 1-3)

Join us for a dragon-themed Story Time and use pipe cleaners to create and tame your very own dragon!

Tuesday, Aug. 8, 11am to 12pm.

Epic Adventures: Escape Rooms

at the Library (Ages 8-16)

This three-day program has you working in teams to create your very own escape room! This includes creating props, puzzles, and an intriguing back story. On the third day, your hard work will be put to the test and another team will attempt to solve your escape room.

Off the Map: Dinosaur Discoveries (Ages 6 and up)

Adventure into the world of dinosaurs with dino-themed trivia games and our adorable dinosaur mobile craft you can hang up anywhere in your home. Please register, supplies are limited.

Summer Reading Club: Special Guest - Mr. J and the Groovy Gang (All Ages)

Join us for a special show with Mr. J and the Groovy Gang. You are sure to be entertained with singing, dancing, clapping, and listening along to songs played on guitar, ukulele, and Mr. J’s foot tambourine!

Mystic Drums (All Ages)

Laughter and learning come together as we embark upon this musical voyage. Meet a cast of colourful characters who will take the audience on a journey of discovery as they search for “The Button People”. This adventure in world music will appeal to the entire family. Family Story Time: Pie in the Face!

(All Ages)

Join us for a pie themed craft and Story Time. To conclude our Story Time, whichever Harriston staff member received the most votes will be getting a pie in the face! Come all summer to vote, one vote per library visit up until August 17.

Stuffie Sleepover (Kids)

Bring your stuffed animal to the library for a sleepover adventure! What will those cute and cuddly creatures get up to overnight in the library? We’ll spend the morning doing crafts and stories, before saying “goodnight” to the stuffies. Stuffed animals will be ready for pickup the following day, with photo journals of their adventures to come after.

Discovery Lab: Robot Maze

(Ages 10-13)

Help our Sphero robots escape the maze using Scratch programming and learning the fundamentals of coding. Please register.

Epic Adventures: Two-day Dragon Egg Making Extravaganza! (Ages 6-13)

Come to the library and spend two days designing and creating your very own dragon egg and habitat! Registration is required for both days.

Full STEAM Ahead: Ewww...that Science is Gross (Ages 4-12)

Discover the science behind things that make you go…ewww! Make “snot” and sneeze it while exploring viscosity, identify various animals from their scat (i.e. poop) and learn about digestion while producing a burp in a bag. Join us on a gross but fun-filled science adventure! Presented by Scientists in School. Please register, space is limited. Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult.
