Puslinch applies for funds to cover ice storm damage

Puslinch councillors are seeking funds through the Ontario Ice Storm Assistance Program.

On June 4, councillors voted in favour of seeking provincial assistance for the December ice storm.

Eligible response and recovery costs must be clearly linked to the ice storm, be incremental to standard operating budgets and incurred to protect public health and safety or to secure access to public roads, sidewalks or frequently travelled routes.

A report by director of finance Mary Hasan stated the ice storm in December caused the township to incur significant incremental wages, fuel costs, and sand/salt costs.

Hasan said providing an expression of interest to the province to obtain provincial assistance could alleviate increased costs as a result of the December 2013 ice storm.

Councillor Susan Fielding asked if there is a minimum cost to be incurred before making an application.

Hasan explained there was a previous program which did require a minimum.

However this is a separate program and as yet, no minimum costs were given, she said.

Mayor Dennis Lever explained the previous program was the Ontario Disaster Recovery Program.

Lever noted Minto Mayor George Bridge had inquired about damage related to an ice storm a year ago.

At that time, the province indicated the program did not include tree damage.

Now a new program is planned and the township is still getting details, Lever said.
