Summer is finally here. So, as residents lay out their summer plans, public health is reminding everyone to get prepared for the heat.
This means keeping a watch on local weather forecasts and notices, and to be prepared with a plan for those hot and humid days.
This summer, there will be some modifications to weather notices issued to the public. Environment Canada will start issuing heat warnings when the temperature will feel like 40 degrees Celsius or greater due to high heat and humidity. When forecasts predict either a prolonged heat warning of four days or more, or humidex values into the high 40s, Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) will assess whether to issue a severe heat warning to inform the public to prepare for weather conditions. Caregivers of seniors and children, are advised to monitor forecasts and alerts daily.
“Having a plan to stay cool is particularly important for those most at risk from heat, including the elderly, those with chronic illnesses, and children,” said Dr. Nicola Mercer, Medical Officer of Health and CEO of WDGPH.
When it’s hot, drink plenty of water, stay out of the sun, and checking on elderly family, friends and neighbours.
It’s also a good idea to plan breaks from the heat by spending a few hours in a cool place. It could be a tree-shaded area, or an air”conditioned spot such as a mall, grocery store, community or recreation centre, place of worship, or public library.
