Sirens for Life is a friendly challenge ... to help save lives.

To that end, local OPP officers were here on July 19 to donate blood.

Canadian Blood Services territory manager Chris Hardy said “Sirens for Life” is an annual campaign in July and August, during which police, firefighters and other emergency service providers can donate blood.

“During the summer time, there is an increased need for blood products ... there is an increased number of traumas which happen,” said Hardy.

“In fact, 40% of most hospital traumas happen between the Victoria Day weekend and the Labour Day weekend.”

He noted it is the same time of year when the organization struggles to get people to donate blood due to vacations.

“For the past number of years, we’ve gone to local emergency providers ... As first responders, they see firsthand the need for blood,” said Hardy.

“We’ve had lots of support from across Wellington.”
