Police offer back-to-school safety tips

WELLINGTON COUNTY – Local police are reminding students, parents and drivers to keep safety top of mind as students return to school.

“Officers will be out in full force patrolling Wellington County roadways next week and throughout the school year, with a focus on school zones and bus stops,” stated a Sept. 3 press release from the Wellington County OPP.

“By keeping these tips in mind, you can help ensure that the school year is both safe and enjoyable for everyone.”

Police offered the following safety tips:

– students should obey crossing guards and look both ways before crossing the street and using crosswalks;

– students should avoid distractions while travelling to school, such as using cell phones, headphones, or other devices that may reduce their awareness of traffic and surrounding hazards;

– students who bike to school should wear a properly fitted helmet and follow the rules of the road;

– motorists should slow down and be vigilant (especially near school zones), watch for children and obey crossing guards;

– students should wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before getting on and off and stay seated while it is in motion; and

– when amber lights are flashing on a school bus, motorists must slow down and be prepared to stop and they must stop for a school bus when its red lights are flashing and its stop arm is extended (failure to do so can result in a $400 to $2,000 fine and six demerit points).
