Phoenix take home championship
The Guelph Phoenix Major Atom girls basketball team brought home a gold medal from the Blessed Sacrament Tournament division ‘3A’ in Hamilton on March 1.
The Phoenix went 3-0 in preliminary pool play defeating Oakville Vytis#2 30-26, Toronto Lords Purple 22-14 and Ottawa Next Level 36-12.
In the semifinal game, the Guelph Phoenix displayed great ball movement, defense and teamwork as the team advanced to the gold medal game by defeating Guelph CYO, 26-18.
The championship game was a hard fought battle against a very physical Chatham-Kent Wildcats team, officials said.
However, the Phoenix’s defensive pressure down the stretch got them a 26-24 win.
Collectively the team had the least amount of points scored against it out of all eight tournament teams thanks to the strong defence, team officials said.
