Perth-Wellington MPP Randy Pettapiece recognized the second annual #GetInTouchForHutch race recently at Queen’s Park.
The event, organized by family and friends of Steven Hutchison, who took his life in 2013, is aimed a raising money to build awareness of mental health issues.
This year’s event, held June 28, raised $50,000 and had 600 participants.
Pettapiece highlighted the strength and hard work of the Hutchison family, who have made a mission of removing the stigma attached to mental illness. Pettapiece also celebrated the Arthur community, which has come together to honour Steven’s memory, raising awareness and funds for charities that provide essential services to youth.
“Today, I would like to recognize the second annual Get in Touch for Hutch race,” Pettapiece said in a statement in the Legislature on July 15.
“On June 28 in Arthur, around 600 participants joined together to raise $50,000 for mental health initiatives and to end the stigma that surrounds mental illness.
“Steven was a great student, a talented athlete and had a strong presence in his community. Tragically he took his own life,” Pettapiece added.
“Steven’s family, friends, and community have rallied together to raise awareness about mental health issues, and end the stigma that so many people face. That stigma is what prevented Steven from reaching out for help.”
Pettapiece continued, “His family is dedicated to ensuring that youth have ways to talk about their struggles. They have partnered with charities that provide youth the assistance they need, when they need it.
“To Kevin, Myrna and Stu: your drive and tireless work to remove the stigma that is attached to mental health is inspirational.”
The MPP also praised supporters and participants of the race for their “generous contributions.”
