Peer connections helps residents and caregivers
A new program is being offered through Community Resource Centre of North and Centre Wellington in conjunction with the Alzheimer Society of Waterloo Wellington.
Ron MacKinnon Executive Director of the Community Resource Centre says the program offers something which he describes as “two programs in one.”
“One half of the program is for the person with dementia Alzheimer’s disease. For them, the resource centre and staff will offer a social program.” MacKinnon said the program is being offered in space graciously donated by the Elora Legion.
“We’ll have activities which will still be in the memories of those with dementia or Alzheimer’s so that they can easily participate. While that is going on the Alzheimer Society will be have volunteers working with the spouse (or care partner) ... giving them the opportunity for them to network with others dealing with the same problems at home.”
MacKinnon said there would also be guest speakers allowing a chance to learn more about issues.
“And then there is the support of one’s peers,” MacKinnon added.
That program begins Feb. 27 and continues to June 12, on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month between 10:30am and noon.
MacKinnon explained “The aim of Peer Connections is to provide meaningful engagement in a friendly and safe environment in the community where care partners and persons with dementia can meet for socialization and recreational activities.”
