Palmerston marked the 33rd anniversary of The Terry Fox Run on Sept. 15.  Organizers are proud to note their community has raised over $93,000 since 1981. They attribute that success to the dedication of volunteers.

This year a total of $6,891 was submitted as of the Community News deadline, but organizers expect the final tally to surpass $7,000. A total of 111 walkers, runners, bikers and strollers participated in the run.

“These numbers represent an increase of approx. 28 per cent and 30% respectively in participation and funds raised, which is extremely satisfying for our committee,” states organizer and cancer survivor Kim Williamson.

Thirty-five of Williamson’s family members were walking in support of her at this year’s event.

The focus over the past couple of years has been to promote the event as a “family” activity which gives parents the opportunity to instill the spirit of sacrifice and determination into the next generation of volunteers, organizers note.

The Palmerston group also encourages participants to view the event as a team building opportunity. Through a “team challenge” they invite groups of co-workers, families, service clubs or Sports teams to rally together to raise funds in support of someone facing cancer or in memory of a loved one.

Additional revenue is also generated through a donation barbecue and t-shirt sales. All food items and door prizes are donated by Palmerston/Minto residents or businesses.
