Orton native Brad Bowden helped Canada’s National Sledge Hockey Team win the bronze medal at the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games, defeating Norway 3-0 in the bronze medal game at Shayba Arena on March 15.
The medal is Canada’s fourth all-time at the Paralympics, having won gold in 2006 in Torino, Italy, silver in 1998 in Nagano, Japan, and bronze in 1994 in Lillehammer, Norway.
Last Saturday’s contest was a rematch of the bronze medal game at the 2010 Paralympics in Vancouver, B.C., won 2-1 by the Norwegians, and a rematch of a March 9 preliminary round match-up, a 4-0 victory for the Canadians.
Billy Bridges, of Summerside, PEI, scored twice to lead the Canadian offence, while Bowden added the other goal as Canada found the back of the net three times in 6:12 early in the second period to break open a scoreless game.
Bowden finished with a goal and two assists, and Corbin Watson, of Kingsville, Ontario, made 10 saves for his third shutout in four games.
During preliminary play, Canada finished atop Group A with a perfect 3-0 record, beating Sweden (10-1) and the Czech Republic (1-0) in addition to Norway. The Canadians were blanked 3-0 by the United States in the semi-final.
