OPP investigate shots fired at area campground

After more than two weeks and repeated requests from the Advertiser, Wellington OPP have finally released details about a suspected stray bullet striking a mobile home here.

On Aug. 24, at approximately 4:44pm, a complainant reported hearing gunshots throughout the day near the Highland Pines Campground on Wellington Road 19 near Belwood.

Police say information they received indicates a mobile home was struck by a possible bullet between 3:30 and 4pm. They suspect the bullet had penetrated the exterior wall of the trailer, causing a hole, and was lodged between the walls.

No one was injured.

Officers attended the campground and spoke with the complainant, who said gunshots are heard in regularly in the surrounding area so he didn’t think much of it until he heard a trailer had been damaged.

Police say the complainant walked to an adjacent property and observed three males with a long gun, who advised him they were shooting beer cans.  He returned to his property and called police. The males and the firearm were gone when police attended the scene.

“The investigation is still ongoing to identify the males and to ascertain if they were involved in the incident and if not to identify a suspect,” OPP media relations officer Cheri Rockefeller said in a Sept. 9 email to the Advertiser.
