Old Love revealed at Fergus Grand Theatre

Old Love is revealed at Fergus Grand Theatre on the weekend of St. Valentine’s Day, a seemingly fitting start for this warm and funny play performed in the cold chill of a Canadian winter.

But Old Love is not just the usual romantic comedy.

Old Love, running from Feb. 14 to 23, deals with relationships between mature people in their 60s not the young romances starring people in their 20s and 30s.

One of Canada’s most loved and enjoyed playwrights, Norm Foster, has written this play set right here in southern Ontario with real characters who could be your neighbours, friends, relatives or maybe even you.

Friendship, dating, marriage each bring their own trials and joys and Old Love is no exception.

A few family secrets and inner feelings kept well under control over the years will be disclosed to the Fergus Grand Theatre audiences.

Now that Bud and Molly (divorced and widowed), 60 something, have reached a certain age, they are now faced with whether to take a chance on love and courtship at this stage in their lives when they could just play it safe and stay in their houses, watching the game on TV or reading a book in their granny suite.

Is dating really worth the effort?

And one of them must emerge from the comforting cocoon and decide how to get the date in the first place.

Is it worth unwrapping the security blanket and tossing the safety net? What happens when middle aged (or older) people think they may have met just the right person?  How do the ‘children’ in their 30s and 40s react?

Old Love is for all ages and has been described as a play that is as ‘funny as it is touching’.  Charmingly written with clever and witty dialogue, the story celebrates the pursuit of love.

Bringing the story to life are 10 talented actors, including familiar names and faces: Tom Bolton and Ruth Connor as the leads supported by experienced actors James Berry and Lauren Stoveld, Nancy Baker, Jennifer Merry and new ECTers Nives Johnson, Evan Pilkington, Lia Kannemann and Chiv Chivaul.

The play will be adjudicated on Feb. 15 for possible inclusion in the Western Ontario Drama Festival (WODL) during the March Break.

Old Love is directed by longtime ECT member Julie Wheeler Bryant who has received many awards bringing recognition to Elora Community Theatre and Centre Wellington through WODL  for her direction of other plays including Norm Foster’s play Affections of May and most recently That Summer by David French.
