Nominations sought for universitys top volunteers

Nominations are now being accepted for the Dr. William Winegard Exemplary Volunteer Involvement awards for the University of Guelph.

In their fourth year, the awards recognize members of the university community who have devoted volunteer time and effort in Guelph and Wellington County.

Current staff, faculty and students volunteering with community organizations, including municipal boards, community fundraising, community social health and service agencies, and nonprofits, are eligible.

The awards are presented in partnership by the University of Guelph, United Way of Guelph and Wellington and the Volunteer Centre of Guelph-Wellington.

They are named in honour of University of Guelph past president, Dr. William Winegard.

He came to the University of Guelph in 1964 and served as president until 1975.

He served as the Member of Parliament for Guelph from 1984 to 1993 and held the portfolio of Minister of State (Science and Technology) from 1989 to 1990 and of Minister for Science from 1990 to 1993.

He was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1998.

Nomination packages are available online at www.volunteerguelphwellington.on.ca under What’s New or by calling the Volunteer Centre at 519-822-0912.

The deadline for nominations is March 12. The awards will be presented April 1.
