Nichol land is finally sold by council

Centre Wellington has authorized its clerk and mayor to sign an agreement that will complete the sale of the old Nichol township garage property.

The township had tried to sell the property several years ago and has had it marked as surplus land for several years. The garage had been located on County Road 7, just north of Salem.

But the garage was destroyed in the 2005 tornado. An attempt to sell the property after that fell through when neighbours objected to the plans for storage on the site by a prospective buyer, who then backed out.

Council might have been lucky to wait.

There were two bids for the land. Treasurer Wes Snarr reported that the high bid was $226,000 from Gary Freeman. The unsuccessful bidder was Laura Kennell, who offered $70,000.

Snarr noted in his report that the bid by Freeman exceeded the real estate evaluation of the property, and he recommended it be accepted.

Council agreed.
