New high school proposed near Arkell
Guelph may soon tower even more over its Arkell neighbours.
On Nov. 1, Puslinch councillors briefly looked at notification from the City of Guelph seeking to amend its official plan to allow construction of a 1,200-student high school adjacent to the Guelph/Puslinch municipal boundary near Arkell.
Puslinch Mayor Dennis Lever said the item has received publicity of late as the Upper Grand District School Board wishes to build a high school there.
“It would certainly have significant impact on students in Puslinch,” said Lever.
He explained construction would result in two high schools, one public and one Catholic located in the south end of Guelph.
The building would represent the first high school in 50 years to be built in Guelph by the public school board.
The 7.48-hectare (18.48-acre) property is at the north-west corner of Victoria Road South and Arkell Road.
Currently the property is vacant and being used for agriculture. Nearby land uses in Guelph include: lands currently zoned and draft plan approved for residential uses, a neighbourhood park and environmental features.
South of Arkell Road are medium-density residential uses, in the form of townhouses and a commercial plaza. Across the road to the east in Puslinch are lands used for agriculture and the University of Guelph Arkell Research Station.
