New candidates join election races in Wellington County municipalities

The list of local candidates officially seeking election or re-election in the Oct. 27 municipal election continues to grow.

Centre Wellington

Incumbent Mayor Joanne Ross-Zuj is seeking re-election in Centre Wellington.

Seeking council seats in Centre Wellington are: Mary Lloyd (Ward 3), and Walt Visser (Ward 5).

Allan Hons and Jean Innes are seeking the Ward 5 Wellington County councillor position, while Shawn Waters is again seeking the Ward 6 county council position.

David Gohn is seeking re-election as Centre Wellington’s Upper Grand District School Board trustee.

Erin

In the Town of Erin, Allan Alls is the lone candidate for mayor at this point, while Jamie Cheyne has filed nomination papers for a position on council.

Current Erin councillor Barb Tocher is seeking the Ward 9 seat on county council.

Guelph-Eramosa

A new candidate has entered the race in Guelph-Eramosa.

Mark Bouwmeester will challenge councillor John Scott for the Ward 4 seat.

Otherwise the candidate list remains unchanged as of March 18.

Mayor Chris White is seeking re-election to the township’s top political post.

Also seeking re-election are Ward 1 councillor David Wolk, and Ward 2 councillor Corey Woods. Political newcomer J. Robbin Wood is seeking the nod in Ward 3.

Ward 7 county councillor Don McKay is also seeking re-election.

Current township councillor Doug Breen is seeking the Ward 8 county council seat now held by Gord Tosh.

Mapleton

Incumbent county councillor John Green, of Mapleton, has formally announced his intention to run for re-election in Ward 2.

So far, two mayoral candidates have filed nomination papers in Mapleton: incumbent township councillors Neil Driscoll and Jim Curry. Incumbent Mayor Bruce Whale has stated he does not intend to seek re-election.

Minto

In Minto, incumbent Wellington County councillor Mark McKenzie will face a challenge to retain his seat.  McKenzie has filed nomination papers to stand for re-election as county councillor for Ward 1. Steve Hardie also recently filed papers to run for the position. Hardie, a Palmerston resident, is director of parks and recreation for the Municipality of North Perth.

Incumbent councillor Mary Lou Colwell has filed nomination papers to stand for re-election, joining Mayor George Bridge on the list of confirmed candidates for Minto council.

Puslinch

In Puslinch Township, incumbent Mayor Dennis Lever is running again and faces a challenge from former Puslinch mayor and Wellington County warden Brad Whitcombe.

Currently in the running for positions as councillors in Puslinch are Daina Makinson, Ken Roth, Matthew Bulmer and Kevin Johnson.

Incumbent county councillor Don McKay is seeking re-election in Ward 7.

Wellington North

In Wellington North, county councillor Gary Williamson remains the lone declared candidate. He is seeking re-election to the Ward 3 post.
