Municipal election nomination period closes Aug. 21
WELLINGTON COUNTY – As summer begins to wind down and the municipal election creeps closer, those who want to run must have their paperwork submitted by Friday.
In order to get your name on the ballot the appropriate paperwork must be filed with your local municipal clerk’s office by 2pm on Aug. 21.
Officials have until 4pm on Aug. 24 to certify or reject nominations received before or on Friday.
Who is eligible run in the municipal election?
To run for a position on council, one must at least 18 years old, a Canadian citizen and qualify as a resident or non-resident elector.
If your municipality has wards, you can run in any ward, regardless of what ward you live in.
To run for a trustee position on a school board, you must be a resident within the jurisdiction of the board and you must be eligible to vote in a school board election. On the day you file your nomination, you must be a Canadian citizen aged 18 or older and you must meet any other qualifications to vote for the school board (for example, being a Roman Catholic, or holding French language rights).
Who is not eligible to run in the election?
The following people are not eligible to be elected to municipal office:
- any person who is not eligible to vote in the municipality;
- an employee of a municipality who has not taken an unpaid leave of absence and resigned;
- a judge of any court;
- an MP, MPP or senator; and
- an inmate serving a sentence in a penal or correctional institution.
