Municipal election heating up; more nominations filed throughout county

Nominations continue to pile up for the Oct. 25 municipal election, which is now just 15 weeks away.

This is a summary of all those candidates who filed to run, as of July 2, for seats on county council as well as on council for the seven lower tier municipalities and two local school boards.

Centre Wellington

A number of individuals have filed for the election in Centre Wellington.

Incumbent Joanne Ross-Zuj will again run for mayor.

In Ward 1, incumbent Shawn Watters has filed, while in Ward 2, incumbent Kirk McElwain has filed and in Ward 4 current councillor Fred Morris is running.

Vinnie Green, John Ortt and incumbent Walt Visser have filed to run in Ward 5, while Mary Lloyd, Steven VanLeeuwen and Mike Wis­niewski are contesting Ward 6.

For county council, incumbents Jean Innes and Bob Wilson have filed to run in Wards 5 and 6, respectively.

Erin

Current mayor Rod Finnie will run again for town council’s top job, while Deb Callaghan has filed to run for councillor.

Guelph-Eramosa

For local council, Nicholas Dalton has filed in Ward 2, while Steven Liebig has filed for Ward 4.

For county council, Bill Cloutis has filed to run in Ward 7, and incumbent Gord Tosh is running again in Ward 8.

Current Upper Grand District School Board trustee Ralph Edwards has again filed for trustee. Steve Redmond has filed to run for a seat on the Wellington Catholic District School Board.

Mapleton

Four new candidates have filed for a seat on council: Richard Brimblecombe, Neil Driscoll, Dan McIntyre, and John Slot.

Current councillor Mike Downey is running for mayor, and current mayor John Green has filed for the ward 2 county council seat currently held by Carl Hall, who is retiring.

Minto

Three people have filed to run in Minto.

Ron Elliott is running for councillor, incumbent Mark MacKenzie is again seeking the Ward 1 county coun­cil seat and incumbent David Ander­son is again running for mayor.

Puslinch

It is a three-horse race for mayor, with Dennis Lever, current councillor Dick Visser and incumbent Brad Whitcombe all running.

Gerald Schmidt and Wayne Stokley are running for township councillor.

Wellington North

In Wellington North, the list has remained relatively un­changed lately.

Seeking the mayor’s job are: incumbent Mike Broom­head, current councillor Ross Chaulk, Jan­ice Lewis and Raymond Tout.

Seeking council positions are:

– Ward 1: incumbent Dan Yake;

– Ward 2: Ron Forrest;

– Ward 3: Lisa Hern; and

– Ward 4: incumbent John Matusinec.

Incumbent Walter Trachsel is running for the Ward 3 county council seat, while Jim Heinbuch and incumbent Lyn­da White are running for county council in Ward 4.
