Mount Forest hockey player on Team Canada for university games

MOUNT FOREST – Taylor Weber of Mount Forest is playing for Team Canada this week in the women’s hockey competition at the Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk, Russia.

Weber is a fifth-year student at Laurentian University in Sudbury, studying sport and physical education.

The five-foot-five centre was captain of the Laurentian Voyageurs this season in U Sports, Canada’s university sports organization.

Mount Forest Minor Hockey posted the following message on Facebook: “What an amazing opportunity for an amazing girl. Congrats Taylor for this amazing opportunity – you make Mount Forest so proud.”

Competition started on March 1, with semi-finals scheduled for March 10 and the gold medal game on March 11.

At the last Universiade games in 2017, Canada won a silver medal in women’s hockey and a bronze in men’s hockey.

Stacey Colarossi, head coach of the Laurentian Voyageurs, is returning as Team Canada coach after two consecutive years at the helm of the U SPORTS Women’s Hockey All-Stars at the Hockey Canada Summer Showcase.

“We have worked diligently to put together a group of athletes who we feel will positively represent all conferences across the country,” said Colarossi.

“Our staff are looking forward to representing U Sports and Canadian university hockey.”
