Moorefield firefighters praised for donations
A Muscular Dystrophy Canada official says Mapleton firefighters are “incredible heroes” who “offer their support, encouragement and time” to those affected by the disease.
Revenue department manager Deanna Totten has reported firefighters at the Moorefield station raised $8,000 for the organization over the last year.
“We admire the ongoing passion and commitment of the members of the [Moorefield station] for all they do in your community and for those affected with muscular dystrophy,” Totten said in a June 1 letter to Mapleton Mayor John Green.
“We are proud to have them on our fundraising team . . . [and] would like to extend thanks to your local firefighters, your community and leaders such as yourself, who support these incredible heroes.”
Totten explained the Moorefield station is one of 600 departments across the nation that last year raised more than $2.5-million for Muscular Dystrophy Canada through “boot drives” (toll booths), community programs, and special events.
Mapleton Fire Chief Rick?Richardson explained the $8,000 raised by the Moorefield station represents the proceeds from two toll booths, from last year’s Canada Day fireworks donations (half the total) and from the 2009 pancake breakfast.
Richardson explained the firefighters’ road tolls regularly raise about $3,000 over a several hours.
“It really is amazing,” Richardson said of how much the firefighters make at their boot drives.
