Councillors are going to take another look at a proposed payout to retiring firefighters in Minto.

The town’s fire committee had recommended firefighters be paid $10 per year of service as a retirement gift. Further, it was recommended the total be included with the final payroll.

While deputy-mayor Judy Dirksen stressed she appreciates the work of local firefighters, she questioned how such a move would affect its treatment of other part-time staff. To her knowledge, there was no similar recognition of its other part-time employees.

She noted there is recognition of service every five years.

At that time, rather than straight cash, she said staff receive a gift certificate equivalent to $10 per year of service which can be used at a Minto business.

“I have a better appetite for that, rather than cash,” she said.

The item was forwarded to the town’s personnel committee for further discussion.
