Currently on display at the Minto Art Gallery is Minto Remembers World War I – an exhibit that honours the 100th anniversary of the Great War.
Many young men from Minto volunteered to serve and a number did not return. The stories of these brave souls have not been told and now is perfect opportunity to research and record their experience in the war and the lives they led afterward.
The exhibit runs until Nov. 1 and includes photos and information about thirty-six volunteers.
Submissions of photos and information about WWI veterans are also welcomed by the arts council.
Community cenotaphs pay tribute to those killed in action and the display includes the stories of Clifford, Harriston, Raymond Pritchard and Thomas Johnson.
Information regarding local industries that supported war initiatives and worked to supply the front is also being sought.
The Harriston Legion has been very helpful with the exhibit and has made available some of the artifacts from the memorabilia room.
The Minto Arts Council will also be holding its annual Christmas silent auction from Nov. 15 through Dec. 6. Contributions welcome. Contact Eleanor Butt, 519-338-5242.
The gallery is located on the third floor of the Harriston Public Library, 88 Mill Street.
Hours are Tuesdays, and Thursdays 6 to 8pm, Wednesdays 1 to 3pm, Fridays 1 to 6pm and Saturdays 11am to 3pm.
