MINTO – The Town of Parry Sound is asking the province to establish consistent rules for e-scooters, while still giving municipalities authority to address local needs.

Minto council supported the call for a province-wide regulatory framework for electric scooters at its Sept. 22 meeting.

Parry Sound argues Ontario’s current e-scooter pilot program leaves individual municipalities responsible for determining how the vehicles operate locally, creating administrative and enforcement challenges, particularly for smaller municipalities.

Minto deputy mayor Jean Anderson said she supports Parry Sound’s resolution, pointing to concerns surrounding e-scooters on sidewalks.

“I understand that they’re convenient and handy, but I know that my husband, who operates a business on the main street, is very concerned about the use of them on sidewalks and the safety issues and the speed with which people go on them and the lack of helmets and safety gear,” Anderson said.

Anderson introduced a motion supporting Parry Sound’s resolution. It was passed by council.
